How does Kiosk mode work?

Kiosk mode works on enterprise devices such that it provides a limited, work-specific environment to the user. When you lock down a device into Kiosk mode, the Kiosk Software restricts device functionality, blocking access to non-essential apps and services.

Kiosk mode works differently on different platforms. But they all fulfil the same essential function.

  • In Android kiosk mode, users are restricted from accessing the home screen or default launcher. The Kiosk launcher runs the designated app or set of apps, blocking user access to all other apps and device settings. Hexnode also supports converting your Android device into a fully managed digital signage, where you can play videos or display images to showcase your product or service. With Hexnode, Android devices can also be set up in website Kiosk mode, enabling access to only the specified websites.
  • Hexnode UEM supports both Single App and Multi App mode in iOS and iPadOS devices. For the Single App Mode, Hexnode makes use of the Guided access feature in iOS to lock your iPhone or iPad dwon to a single app, and prevents users from switching to the home screen. With Hexnode, iOS devices can also be locked down into Autonomous single app mode. However, this mode works only for specific apps. Here, IT can launch the app onto the foreground, after which the app is released only when the user finishes the assigned tasks.
  • In the case of Windows devices, Kiosk mode is based on a feature called Assigned Access. Here, you create a separate local User Account and limit access to specific applications. The configured app is launched only when we log into the Kiosk account. In the Single App Mode, the app is launched right after the welcome screen and cannot be minimized, whereas in the Multi app Mode, the apps are accessible through the start menu, and can be minimized.
